Busan's Gamcheon Culture Village: Photo Spots and What to Skip
Explore the best photo spots in Busan's Gamcheon Culture Village, plus tips on what to skip for a more enjoyable visit.
After living in Seoul for a while, I decided it was time to explore more of South Korea, starting with the vibrant Busan. Known for its beaches and seafood, Busan also houses the artistic gem of Gamcheon Culture Village, which is a favourite among tourists and Instagram enthusiasts alike. The village's colourful houses and winding alleys offer countless photo opportunities, but not all spots are worth your time.
Getting to Gamcheon Culture Village
Gamcheon Culture Village is located in the Saha District of Busan, easily accessible by public transport. From Busan Station, you can take the subway to Toseong Station (Line 1), which takes about 20 minutes. From there, it’s just a short walk or a quick bus ride (bus number 2 or 1-1) to the village. The journey costs around 1,500 won (approximately $1.30).

Must-Visit Photo Spots
While the entire village is brimming with charm, there are specific spots that stand out for their aesthetic appeal and cultural significance.
1. The Colourful Houses
The first thing you’re likely to notice are the colourful houses stacked on the hillside. These homes have been transformed into artistic canvases, showcasing murals and installations that make for stunning photography. Make sure to check out the Artist’s Village signs that indicate which houses feature artworks, providing a nice direction for your photo wanderings.
2. The Viewpoint at the Top
After wandering through the narrow alleys, head up to the viewing platform located at the highest point in the village. The panoramic view of the entire Gamcheon Village, along with the ocean in the distance, is definitely worth the climb. It's a popular spot, so if you're looking for a good angle for your photo, consider visiting early in the morning.
3. The Clock Tower and Sculpture Park
Near the entrance of Gamcheon is a small clock tower surrounded by various sculptures created by local artists. This area is great for candid shots, as the contrasting artworks with the colourful houses create a vibrant backdrop. Be sure to grab a photo with the clock tower; its unique design is emblematic of the village.
4. The Wall of Hope
Located near the entrance, the Wall of Hope is adorned with colourful tiles that visitors can paint. It serves as a great interactive photo opportunity and shows the community spirit of Gamcheon. Just keep in mind that you may need to wait for your turn, as it can get crowded.
What to Skip
While many of the attractions in Gamcheon are worth visiting, there are a few things I would recommend skipping for a more enjoyable experience.
1. The Overrated Shops
With the influx of tourists, some shops have become overly commercialised, selling overpriced souvenirs that are not unique to the area. For example, many shops sell the same keychains and postcards that can be found everywhere else in South Korea. Instead, consider supporting local artisans directly if you want a genuine keepsake.
2. The Cafes with Long Lines
There are several cafes that are popular among social media users but have long wait times. The Blue Roof Cafe, for instance, is known for its great views but often has lines that can last over 30 minutes. Instead, look for smaller, less crowded spots where you can enjoy local specialities like patbingsu (shaved ice) without the hassle.
3. Rushing Through the Streets
Many visitors seem to race through the main paths just to snap photos, which means they miss the hidden gems tucked away in quieter corners. Take your time to explore the side alleys and chat with locals if possible. Some of the best moments come from serendipitous discoveries rather than staged shots.

Final Thoughts
Gamcheon Culture Village offers a delightful mix of art, culture, and community. While it’s easy to get swept up in the popular hotspots, the true charm lies in the small details you might overlook. As someone who appreciates the artistic journey, I find that a little exploration can lead to a more authentic experience.
