When you think of Hongdae, it's easy to jump straight to thoughts of pulsating clubs and all-night partying. As someone who has lived in Seoul for a while now, I can assure you that there's a lot more to this vibrant neighbourhood than just getting lost in the thumping bass of a dance floor. From quirky cafes to art installations, here are some suggestions for how to make the most of your time in Hongdae without stepping into a club.

Stroll Through the Hongdae Free Market

Every Saturday from March to November, the Hongdae Free Market gives artists and creatives a space to showcase their work. Located at the park near Hongik University, this event features handmade crafts, art, and live performances. You can find everything from unique jewellery to custom artwork.

  • Location: Hongik University Park
  • Time: Saturdays, 1 PM - 6 PM
  • Cost: Free

The atmosphere is laid-back, and you might even have the chance to chat with the artists directly. It's an excellent way to support local talent and perhaps pick up a souvenir that isn't mass-produced.

Food Adventures in Hongdae

When the sun goes down, Hongdae transforms into a food lover’s paradise. Beyond the typical Korean BBQ and fried chicken joints, you’ll find a variety of eateries that deserve attention.

1. Gopchang Jeongol

If you’re in the mood for something hearty, try a gopchang (beef intestine) jeongol at Gopchang Jeongol House. A generous portion costs around 15,000 won (approximately $12). The rich broth and tender beef are perfect for sharing.

2. Vegan Options

For those seeking plant-based meals, Plant Cafe offers a menu full of innovative vegan dishes. A filling meal here will run you about 12,000 won ($10). Their vegan burgers and desserts are a hit, even among non-vegans.

3. Street Food

Don't forget to explore the street food stalls. You can munch on tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) for roughly 3,000 won ($2.50) or sample hotteok (sweet pancakes) for about 2,000 won ($1.50).

Cultural Stops

Hongdae is also known for its artistic vibe. Here are a couple of cultural spots to check out:

1. Trick Eye Museum

This interactive 3D museum is perfect for amusing photo opportunities. Tickets are around 15,000 won ($12). While the concept may seem touristy, it’s a fun experience, especially if you visit with friends.

2. Hongdae Mural Street

Take a stroll down Murals Street, where vibrant artworks cover many walls. It’s a perfect spot for Instagram photos and immerses you in the local street art scene.

Live Music and Performances

For those who still want to enjoy a lively atmosphere without heading to a club, Hongdae offers various live music venues. Check out Club FF for indie bands or Rolling Hall for a mix of genres. Entry fees usually range from 10,000 to 20,000 won ($8 to $16) depending on the act.

Open Mic Nights

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider performing yourself. Various cafes host open mic nights, allowing local talent—and brave tourists—to showcase their skills. This is a fantastic way to engage with the community.

Late-Night Cafes

If you’re looking to wind down after a busy evening, Hongdae has plenty of late-night cafes that offer a comfortable atmosphere to relax and chat. Thanks Nature Cafe is popular for its sheep-themed decor and serves up delicious waffles and drinks late into the night.

Prices typically range from 5,000 to 10,000 won ($4 to $8) for food and beverages, making it an affordable spot to unwind.

Conclusion

While clubbing is a huge part of Hongdae’s nightlife, it's far from the only option. Whether you’re interested in local art, delicious food, or live music, this neighbourhood has a unique vibe that goes beyond just partying. So next time you're in Hongdae, consider taking a step back from the club scene and exploring these diverse offerings.
